The Feminine Paradox
May 2025-now
Society & Culture
What does it mean to be a “bad feminist”? Why does softness unsettle people? Why are some women allowed to be tragic, while others are called problematic?
This project uses Lana Del Rey’s music, persona, and public reception as a case study to explore how femininity, feminism, race, and power intersect in 21st-century pop culture. Through close analysis of her lyrics, music videos, interviews, and controversies, I examine how Del Rey performs longing, passivity, sexuality, and trauma in ways that both echo and resist historical ideals of womanhood.
The project was originally designed as a 7-week course and later adapted into a video lecture series. Currently, 3 videos are published on plateform Bilibili, gaining viewership of 116K and 2.2K followers. The content sparked discussions on artist autonomy and earned viewer praise for clarity, depth, and analysis on universal struggles on vulnerability.
